About Us
Who we are, what we do, and where we came from
We opened in an abandoned hairdresser’s shop in St Dogmaels in 1997. The following year we moved to Cardigan and became tenants of the Cardigan and Clynderwen Farmers’ Co-op for several years. In 2005 we moved up into the town centre, purchasing our current premises in Pendre, on the busiest corner in Cardigan.
Originally two buildings but knocked together in 1984, they have a rich 200 year history reputedly including a visit from the Beatles in the early 60s who called in when Brian Epstein needed to borrow a microphone from Manny Griffiths (whose shop it then was) when they played the Black Lion. ( Update: this story is almost certainly untrue, although Alun Owen, the screenwriter of A Hard Day’s Night, had a holiday home locally in which he hosted the Beatles on occasion).
The building has been refurbished and repainted (twice) since we’ve been in occupation.
What we sell
Nowadays, the majority of our bike sales are ebikes equipped with Bosch electric componentry. We like Bosch not only for the security provided by having back up available from a large manufacturer, but also because of the quality and functionality of the products. We are certified as a “Bosch eBike Specialist Retailer”.
We also sell non-electric bikes from Raleigh, Ridgeback, Dawes, Claud Butler, and kids bikes from Raleigh, Ridgeback and Squish.
We sell high quality components and acccessories from industry leading brands such as Shimano, Campagnolo, Sram, Schwalbe, Lezyne, SKS, Cateye, Ortlieb, Topeak, Crank Brothers and many many more. As a side business, we also sell Calor Gas and Campingaz (which we inherited from the previous inhabitants of the shop).
We have trade accounts with leading wholesale and distribution companies, so can source nearly any high end, low end or hard-to-find part you require. Bike hire is popular in the summer months. We have a fleet of cycles appropriate for short to medium journeys for road or light off-road use, and a small ebike hire fleet.
Workshop
Our fully-equipped workshop can cope with almost any repair or refurbishment required, including hub gears and wheelbuilding, electronic shifting and e-bike servicing/diagnostics. We have experience in the cycle trade dating back to the early 80s, so have kept abreast of all the technological changes since then. In June 2019 we installed a powered workstand to take the strain out of lifting heavy electric bikes to a comfortable ergonomic working position. A recent very useful tool is a machine to bed in newly-installed disc-brake pads.
Off-Road Riding
There are no waymarked forestry trails in the immediate vicinity of Cardigan, for the simple reason that there are no sizeable forestry plantations locally. However cycling is permitted on bridleways, and interesting off-road routes can be explored by identifying these rights of way on old fashioned paper maps or suitable apps. The reservoir at Llys y Fran has a cycle path/footpath running around the perimeter, with several sections of singletrack. Brechfa Forest is the nearest mountain bike trail centre with waymarked trails suitable for all from the novice to the most experienced thrill-seeker. Nant yr Arian, inland from Aberystwyth, is also fairly accessible from Cardigan.
